• Senior consultant and researcher in various fields of dentistry, University of Stellenbosch and University of Western Cape.
• Key role in developing, implementing and co-coordinating postgraduate Diploma courses in Aesthetic Dentistry at the University of Stellenbosch
• Peer reviewed many scientific publications for the Journal of the Dental Association of South Africa.
• Statistics consultant for research projects at the Medical and Dental Faculty at the University of Stellenbosch.
• Presentations at national and International Scientific Meetings (32) and has 44 publications in scientific peer reviewed journals.

Awards

• Dental Association of South Africa Gold Medal Award for exceptional achievement during his study career.
• Ernest Oppenheimer Travel Fellowship to do postgraduate studies in Oral Surgery (1978).
• Middleton-Shaw Fellowship by the Dental Association of South Africa to study professional Ethics in Dentistry in Health Care and make curricular proposals for pre- and post-graduate Ethics education in South Africa.
• Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (2008).

Clinical interests

• Practice with focus on multidisciplinary dentistry.
• Special interests:  implant dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, aesthetic restorative dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery and 3D diagnostics and the integration of these disciplines in aesthetic restorative dentistry.
• More than 34 years clinical experience and regularly attends specialized courses to upgrade his knowledge and skills.

Current practice and accreditations

• Private practice – Dr Hartshorne has been in private practice for 25 years and is currently a Director at Dr’s Hartshorne and Associates, Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry and Implantology, Intercare Medical and Dental Centre.
• Visiting Professor – He is also a Visiting Professor at Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, Dental School, University of Pretoria.
• International Team for Implantology (ITI) – Member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and Team Member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Centre of Excellence at the University of Pretoria.
• Member of the Forum for Oral Rehabilitation (FOR).
• Member of the POSEIDO Network. The Periodontology, Oral Surgery, Esthetic and Implant Dentistry Organization. An International network of Academic departments, foundations and institutes.
• Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.
